Coyote
was going along one day, when he came
across a group of Cowboys roping horses.
Coyote was so impressed that he approached
the Cowboys and said, "Hey! That is quite
a trick! Can I have a rope and try?"
The Cowboys laughed and gave Coyote a rope
to try to lasso the horses. Coyote watched
how the Cowboys roped the horses for a
time and then he tied his rope around his
waist, like the cowboys had their ropes,
and threw his lasso at a horse. It caught
the horse by surprise, and the horse
galloped off, dragging Coyote, surprised,
behind it.
The horse ran and ran. It went faster and
faster. Coyote bounced along behind it,
his tail sticking straight up in the
air.

The Cowboys
followed the tracks of the horse dragging Coyote,
who were now far off in the distance, and soon
came across just the bones of Coyote. They assumed
that the rest of him must still be hanging on to
the rope and horse.

This
story has a real "Pecos Bill" sound to it.
You will recall Pecos Bill was raised by
"Coyote", and taught the ways of the
Cowboys by his foster parent, Coyote. I
feel Pecos Bill stories were the "cowboys"
extension of the Apache Coyote Tales.
